Year 8 Options

As of September 2018, your son/daughter will begin to study the courses they wish to pursue until the end of Year 11, so they will be required to make their GCSE/Vocational option choices.

The course information flyers, which will soon be available on our website, contain very important information, about the curriculum your child will study. It lists the core subjects, and choices available within the optional element of the curriculum.

You and your child will have some idea of their strengths and weaknesses from reports, assessments and comments from subject staff. It is necessary, therefore, that this knowledge is applied to the choices that have to be made.

This year, we are introducing a new process for students to choose the subjects that they wish to study. Listed below are the steps to this process:

Week beginning 22nd January 2018

  • Options morning assembly 25th January 2018 (students will receive a sticker showing the details of their learning pathway on Monday 22nd January

Week beginning 29th January 2018

The Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all students. Certain subjects are known as the core. These are compulsory and will be studied by all students.

There are an additional range of options that students need to select from. Some of these options are from the English Baccalaureate suite of qualifications and others are from the Open suite of qualifications. These will include a range of GCSE and vocational options.  The curriculum is split into three pathways: Yellow, Blue and Green. Your child will soon be instructed which pathway they have been assigned and the potential options are indicated below.

For students who wish to pursue a more academic route the subjects highlighted in green should be considered. Choosing some of these would provide a solid foundation for progression to study A Levels and continued education at university. The subjects highlighted in blue would allow for a mixture of academic and vocational courses and allow flexibility on future career paths. These subjects would be ideal for those students who wish to undertake studies that provide a good preparation for the world of work and/or future post 16 vocational study.
