STEM Event with Local and National Employers
On Friday 2nd October, our Science Department held a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) event for students.
The event was titled “I didn’t realise I could do that with STEM” and aimed to raise aspirations of students, inspiring them to realise their potential by showcasing a range of companies and exciting career opportunities.
A number of major regional and national employers attended the STEM event, some of whom have never attended a school event in the UK before.
There is a great deal of STEM related industry in the North East region and employers often struggle to find local people with the right skills to fill vacancies. The event hopefully inspired young people and particularly girls to go onto further study and future careers within STEM related industries.
This proves that employers believe in STEM and North Durham Academy, as well as all the great work that we’re doing in terms of providing students with great opportunities.
The event was a collaboration between Stanley Area Action Partnership and North Durham Academy. Interactive workshops and presentations were run by Accenture, Dyer Engineering, Thomas Swan Engineering, the RAF, GoAhead Training, Durham University and Northumbria University.
Accenture commented that they have “never visited a UK school or college before and are excited by the possibility of finding potentially talented employees in the future”.
