Uniform

Standards at North Durham Academy are extremely high and this starts with the way your child looks.  Academy uniform is compulsory and exceptions cannot be made if your child attends school not dressed in full Academy uniform.

Ordering academy uniform

Following consultation with students, parents/carers and staff we have decided to phase out the current purple blazer. The main reasons for this are to bring all students into the same uniform and reduce the costs to parents/carers for purchasing two different coloured blazers.

From May 2017, all new blazers purchased from our uniform provider, Price & Buckland, will be plain grey with the Academy logo embroidered on the chest. There will be no purple braiding on the lapel. You will only need to replace the blazer when your son/daughter can no longer wear their current one. Details about how to order and pay for new blazers can be found on the Price & Buckland website www.pbparentsonline.co.uk/northdurhamacademy.

In order to mark their final year of compulsory schooling and to give them a new ‘senior’ identity we have decided to change the current Year 11 tie so we are asking that all current Year 10 students will require this new tie ready for September 2017. Again, details about this can be found on the Price & Buckland website.

Key Stage 5 - NDA16+

NDA16+ Students at North Durham Academy are not required to wear a uniform like students in Years 7 to 11. We do, however, have a dress code as you would expect in any adult place of work or study.

We believe all NDA16+ students should take pride in themselves and their appearance, just as our Academy is proud of them and their achievements. Also, being smart and presentable shows a positive attitude and demonstrates a genuine commitment to your studies. Our 16+ students are role models for the younger students in the Academy and are therefore expected to set a good example in everything they do.

In discussion with North Durham Academy students, we have therefore agreed the following dress code:

  • Photographic ID should be worn on a lanyard and be visible at all times.
  • Clothing that is too revealing or likely to cause embarrassment must not be worn.
  • Students should not wear clothing with offensive pictures / writing or football shirts.
  • 16+ students are allowed to wear jewellery that is minimal and discreet. Excessive facial piercings make up and hair styles/colours should not be worn in the Academy.
  • The wearing of hats, scarves and outdoor coats inside the Academy and in lessons is not allowed to help with safeguarding the building.
  • 16+ students are permitted to wear sixth form hoodies inside the Academy.

The list above is not exhaustive and is intended to show what our students believe is acceptable for 16+ study. Where a student is concerned about the appropriateness of their clothing choices, they should consult one of the NDA16+ Team (Mr Watson, Miss O'Neil, Mrs Hole or Mrs Cudlipp) for guidance.

Students who do not meet these requirements may be sent home to change and persistent failure to follow the NDA16+ dress code will result in disciplinary action.

Outdoor clothing

We want students to travel to and from the academy ensuring they are safe and warm. Students are encouraged to wear appropriate outdoor clothing during inclement weather to get to/from the academy such as coats, hats and gloves, however, it is expected that students will still wear their full academy uniform.

The Academy has some outdoor clothing for sale at Main Reception:

Academy Fleece £15.00

Academy black outdoor coat with grey fleece lining £20.00

Windcheater blue £10.00

Outdoor footwear

Students who wear alternative suitable winter footwear, such as, wellington boots, are expected to either bring their plain black shoes, with no visible markings, to change into or to borrow a pair of black plimsoles which are held in the Year Offices.  This will help to ensure corridors and other areas are kept dry so students and staff do not slip.

Storage of outdoor footwear and clothing

Students should, where possible, store their belongings in their bag or their locker.  If it is too big to fit or wet they can leave it in their Year Office.  However, students must be aware that any clothing or footwear left remains their responsibility.
