• NDA16+ Common Room

General Entry Criteria

Important Information:

  • Students generally select three courses to study in Sixth Form. While some may wish to discuss the option of a fourth subject, students studying A Level or BTEC courses must choose a minimum of three courses in order to enrol.
  • Students wishing to study Motor Vehicle or Hairdressing need not choose any other courses as these are full-time professional qualifications.
  • Students who do not achieve at least Level 4 in English and Maths GCSE in Year 11 will be required to re-sit these courses in Sixth Form.
  • Students are able to select a combination of A-Level and BTEC courses. However, all programmes of study must be discussed with a member of the 16+ team at interview.

  • Students wishing to follow our Advanced pathway and study a mixture of A Level and BTEC courses require a minimum of 4 separate GCSE subject passes at grades A* to C, and Maths and English GCSE at Level 4 or above.

Our Advanced pathway has been hugely successful for some of our brightest and hardest working students in supporting their progress to a range of exciting university courses and apprenticeships.

  • Students wishing to follow our Vocational pathway and study a mixture of Level 3 BTEC courses require 3 separate GCSE subject passes at grades A* to C, and Maths and English GCSE at Level 4.

Our Vocational pathway allows students a more practical and employment orientated learning experience. However, following national changes, the increased academic rigour of the ‘new style’ BTECs we offer allows many of our vocational students to progress to university, while others opt for employment or apprenticeship routes.

  • Students wishing to follow our Professional pathway and study a mixture of Level 3 BTEC courses require 2 separate GCSE subject passes at grades A* to D, and Maths and English GCSE at Level 3 or above.

Our Professional Motor Vehicle and Hair and Beauty courses offer students the opportunity learn and work in a professional setting within the Academy. As a result of our links to local business, many students who have chosen these courses have continued to progress and gained employment at the end of their study.

Entry to Year 13

The courses that students follow in Year 13 increase in difficulty and they need to study in a mature and independent way. Students must therefore demonstrate these abilities during their time in Year 12.

Progression from Year 12 to Year 13 is not automatic and students must accomplish the following requirements to continue their studies into Year 13:

  1. Achieved at least DDE grades for Year 12 A Level courses, and/or have all BTEC units completed to the required standard by the end of Year 12 BTEC deadline.
  2. Demonstrated a positive attitude to learning during Year 12.
  3. Successfully completed the Year 13 Induction Programme that begins after the Year 12 summer exams. Please note that Year 12 does not finish until the end of the academic year.

As well as the general entry criteria for North Durham Academy’s 16+ courses, some subjects have additional requirements, please see our Subject Specific Entry Criteria page.
